Getting started
To make the most of e-learning and e-assessment, check out what resources and facilities and support are available to you. For example.
- Are computers available in the building where you work?
- Can you and your learners access them?
- Is the centre you work in part of an area-wide learning grid? (For example, some local authorities have networked all their community-based learning and cultural sites. No matter where you work, you and your learners can access the resources of the local museum, the library service and more).
- Has your organisation created a 'learning platform' or 'virtual learning environment' (VLE)? This is an on-line network accessible to any tutor or learner with a 'log-in' code. You could use it to store your resources, post work for learners to complete in their own time, share ideas and resources with colleagues, store learners' 'virtual' portfolios and records of progress.
- What other equipment does your organisation have? Digital cameras? Camcorders, and sound recorders? Interactive whiteboards? How can you access them and learn how to use them?
- Does your organisation have trained e-guides and technician support to help you?
Subject Learning Coaches will be able to explore how to get the most out of e-learning in the subject coaching networks. Link to information about the SLCs' programme

You will need to familiarise yourself with the implications of copyright
and privacy laws. Go to
New browser window: www.aclearn.net,
and put 'copyright' into the search box. The first entry to come up will
be 'Frequently asked questions'. Scroll down this section until you come
to the fourth question. In the answer is a link to a resource called 'Copyright
and resource creation'.
