Karen:
The importance of asking the questions while they're actually doing things; it's all linked to their assessment at the end that I do up myself. There are certain things that I would like them to know or learn over that term and so all that is just generally, informally quizzing them throughout the sessions. Not every week, I give them a week off now and again or we do a group quiz or something like that and that's just to help them towards getting it in their minds so that when we come to the end that they've been over all that information and so they can hopefully answer all the questions correctly on their self-assessment.
What we are going to do now; I need you all to do an evaluation form for me for the course, like you normally do, and also to fill in the final self-assessment side of the sheets that we did right back at the very beginning, alright? We've been through all the things you've done; the group quizzes as well, to hopefully help consolidate some of the stuff we've been learning so that hopefully we'll all know what the answers are on the last side of the sheet.
What I do is at the end of the term they all get to see what they've come up with for their answers, etc, and how it gets corrected and whether they're right or wrong. And I always let them know.
If there's been an issue over something we had last term and we had been over it and done all the quizzes and everything, and everybody had been answering all the right questions with the right answers and it was great and we came to do the paper and it all sort of went…'oh, where did that come from?'. So I thought there's obviously still an issue here, so we need to backtrack over some of this and so far from the feedback I've had and the assessments we've done so far this week, we're getting there. So that's a good sign.

How do you currently assess learners' knowledge, skills and understanding? What methods do you use? Think about ways you could develop assessment practices more fully so that you are clear about what further help learners need and so that, together, you can set new goals and targets. Consider what assessment methods you could use to produce evidence of progress and achievement for learners wishing to work towards qualifications.
Fitness tutor, Karen, talks about how she assesses learners' understanding in her core conditioning class and how this provides her with valuable feedback. Compare this with your own approach to gathering information about learners' needs and aspirations, and your own approach to planning.
