Tree of learning
Video transcript
Voiceover:
In this session about email and the Internet learners are using a flip chart tree of learning to enable them to record the IT skills they have already mastered.
Tutor:
So do you remember when we started and what we referred back to, we all wrote an individual learning aim so what we're going to do now is go back to those learning aims to see whether we have managed to meet them. Denise, would you like to help us and tell us what you wanted to learn?
Denise:
Yeah, well for me I'm looking to go back to work now because my daughter's just started school so I really needed to improve all my computer skills. I started off with the internet and email and I can now use the internet very easily and more confidently and I can send emails and receive them and I'm confident with doing those as well.
Tutor:
Okay.
Denise:
We used the tree of learning in the first session and Lynn asked us all individually what we wanted to learn out of the course and what we were hoping to achieve so we all wrote down that and it's interesting to see how many different things everybody wanted to get out of it and by referring back to the tree of learning we're looking at it and making sure that everyone has gained and achieved what they want so — yeah — it's like a main focal point all the time. The tree of learning is new to me, it's not something that I've encountered before so that was quite a new idea to me and yes I've gained a lot and as I say I want to learn more, so more learning trees.
Learner:
I wanted to learn how to do attachments so I could send attachments to the family and I think I've done that — well I'm sure I've done it, I've done more than that really because since coming here it's encouraged me, I've got a webcam, I've got all that set up and it works and it's fine.
Tutor:
Okay and so your wife likes the pictures as well does she?
Learner:
Oh yeah.
Tutor:
Okay so we'll find you on our tree.
Learner:
Well the tree of learning has been useful because it's always been in my mind what I put on there and I've made an effort to do what I said I wanted to do in the first place. I've looked back a lot because like I say I didn't find it easy, you know, and I had to keep going back to convince myself, to tell myself what I wanted out of it, you know, because it's so easy to drift off and skip things and not get a fuller learning. I'll tell you something, I was impressed with the first lesson, because of that tree of learning and we didn't do that the first time and I actually went home to my wife and said 'You would have liked it because it started so differently' and I told her exactly what Lynn had done with the board and the leaves — well they were just tickets then, put the leaves, and she thought that were great and that did impress me.
