Tutor:

Maak eens een zin, één zin in de verleden tijd, wat is er gebeurd, heel snel twee zinnen.

Female learner 1:

De politieagent zei tegen de man dat hij een formulier invullen moet.

Learner:

Well I think the fact that you speak Dutch all the time during the lessons is very helpful for me especially because yes I understand it when I hear it but I need to get confidence to speak it and so somebody has to make me speak it.

Female learner 2:

Een ogenblikje alstublieft, ik verbind u door.

Learner:

If you do have role play or if you do a group work of only two people you have to be very disciplined not to use English.

Male learner:

En (erm) ze zegt.

Tutor:

Hoe heet dat spul dat je op de band doet in in in (erm) de vlieghaven, in de luchthaven op de band, hoe heet dat spul?

Female learner 1:

Bagage?

Tutor:

Bagage!

Tutor:

Visual learning can help a lot. It's obviously another way of explaining things and maybe it's better than having an English translation next to something if you have a picture then you're not going to even think about the English and it obviously helps the fluency in terms of you will just see something and automatically speak the Dutch.

Tutor:

Ja, een elektronische agenda, ja, ja, en is het heel duur?

Tutor:

Dat is een handvat.

Tutor:

We use a lot of pictures to get people to look at things and use the target language immediately without having to translate because they could immediately see what was on the projector and talk about it without having to go through English. Also when people got stuck about certain words I picked up my own bag, actually showing them the zip so they actually knew what I was on about. And body language, showing people what I wanted them to do rather than just only saying what I wanted them to do, that kind of thing helps to get people to understand just Dutch.

Tutor:

Zoek je andere persoon, oké dankjewel. Eén van jullie is nu de politieagent en jij moet alle vragen stellen en de andere persoon komt zeggen ik heb mijn fiets verloren of ik heb mijn laptop verloren of weet ik wat 't is.

Tutor:

The group we worked with today, they were on very similar levels but they were on different confidence levels. I know the ones that speak much more easily and are much happier to try things out and try things from scratch whilst other ones may be a bit quieter so I try to put the really confident ones with some quieter ones so that they would have a chance to hear things and to maybe try risking things for themselves as well.

Male learner:

Wanneer heb je het verloren?

Female learner 2:

Vandaag om (erm) 2uur.

Male learner 2:
