Use of the taught language – Videos

These video clips show a number of classes, from post-beginners Dutch to advanced level Italian. All of the learners are being encouraged to use the taught language, but note how the tutor approaches this differently according to the level of the learners.

Watch out for the way the Dutch tutor uses visual stimuli and gesture to encourage learners to speak the taught language. The learners are participating in the activity, 'Lost property'.

In the Level 3 Spanish class, learners are able to operate more independently. They are used to speaking Spanish throughout the session, and when the tutor explains anything, she explains it in the taught language. These learners are engaged in a role play, 'A mystery to solve'.

In the Level 4 Italian class, show a greater degree of fluency. Again, explanations are given in the taught language to avoid disrupting the flow of discourse and the mindset of the learners. The class is engaged in a role play 'Court case'.

All of the resources mentioned here are available for you to download.

Learners in all classes talk enthusiastically about the importance of being exposed to and using the taught language during sessions.
