If you give them a real context, if you ask them to express their personal opinion they feel a bit reserved, they feel very shy about it so they just don't want to do it because they are afraid of what others may think about them. But if you just give them a new identity they forget about themselves and what they want to do is just to really use the Italian language.
Male learner 1:
¿Desde cuando lleva trabajando en la galería?
Female learner 3:
He estado aquí desde el año 2001.
Male learner 1:
¿Hoy es la primera vez que alguien robó un cuadro?
Female learner 3:
No ha pasado antes este horror.
Voiceover:
The tutor listens carefully to the learners but doesn't interrupt the flow by correcting mistakes.
Male learner 1:
Loretta, ¿por qué estaba en la galería hoy?
Female learner 2:
Porque tenía una cita con un hombre.
Female learner 1:
(Not clear sound)… en el momento del robo?
Female learner 2:
Se fue al baño. No sé.
Male learner 1:
Naturalmente, estaba sola en el baño.
Female learner 2:
¡Oh no! Él, él…(background laughter). Él estaba solo en el baño y yo estaba en la sala. Ahh, él dentro de, ahh, los dos salas.
Tutor:
The activity has helped me, not to bring the group together but to maintain it together as well and on the other hand it helps as well to identify the weaknesses so you know it's going to give me lots of confidence as well in order to prepare the following sessions.
Voiceover:
The tutor will now go on and plan a range of activities directly related to the aspects of language where learners need to improve their skills and in doing so she will take account of each individual learner's needs.
